The boundaries of old Wilkes County should be examined to determine if any of that land fell into Lincoln County, paying attention to the creeks mentioned in the deeds of both counties. Lincoln County was created from Wilkes County on February 20, 1796 by an Act of the General Assembly and was named for General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) of Revolutionary War fame. Lincoln was in charge of the Continental Army's Southern Department and later became President George Washington's first Secretary of War.

Maps were scanned in such a manner as to provide details for locating creeks, branches, rivers, lakes, churches, schools and cemeteries. This will enable you to better locate the old homeplace using the description from old non-specific deeds. Also, a convenience in locating both private and public cemeteries in the area. Lincoln and Wilkes County records should be searched together.

Many colonials who settled in Savannah also owned large rice plantations in Liberty County. Also, after General Oglethorpe removed the regiment to England in 1744, residents of Frederica began moving into Liberty. Liberty County, located in the southeastern portion of the state on the Georgia coast, was one of the seven Georgia counties created from the original colonial parishes on February 5, 1777. The Guale Indians inhabited that area from prehistoric times, and in the eighteenth century the tribe became a part of the Muskogee or Creek Confederation. The Spanish placed a mission on St. Catherines Island in the late sixteenth century among the Guale Indians. After General Oglethorpe left St. Simons Island, some of the settlers to Frederica removed into Liberty County, settling on large tracts of land grants. In 1752 after the Charter was surrendered, land was opened up to large parties and congregations for settlement. A group of Puritans from Dorchester, South Carolina (originally from Dorchester, Massachusetts) took up large land grants and developed communities such as Midway and Sunbury, a thriving Colonial port. In 1777, Liberty County was officially created.
Jasper was first Old Randolph County. Jasper County was created in 1807 from Baldwin County and called Randolph County. The present-day Randolph County was created on December 20, 1828. Part of Jasper was given to Morgan in 1815 and part to Newton in 1821. The name was changed December 10, 1812 to Jasper County and named in honor of William Jasper, an officer in Colonel William Moultrie's Second South Carolina Infantry, 1775. Jackson County was created in 1801 from portions of Franklin County. It was named after James Jackson, Revolutionary War hero, US Senator and the Governor who had to deal with the fraud involved in the Yazoo Land Act. The county originally covered 1800 square miles however from 1801 until 1914 portions were taken from Jackson to form parts of the present counties of Clarke, Oconee, Madison, Gwinnett, Hall, Walton, Banks, and Barrow. Many Revolutionary War Soldiers from South Carolina settled in Franklin County, and Franklin and Jackson should be searched together.

When tracing ancestors in Henry County, it is important to remember that this was the parent county for DeKalb and Fulton Counties. Therefore, those persons who drew in the 1821 Land Lottery may have gotten land as far North as Atlanta. The important thing to check for is the District and Land Lot Number as this will help narrow it down. Suffice it to say that in the days of Marthasville, people probably neglected to travel to McDonough to file their deeds, wills and other records. It is therefore prudent to also examine DeKalb, Rockdale and Fulton Counties for additional clues. Henry County was created in 1821 from Dooly, Houston, Monroe and Fayette Counties. It once comprised the City of Atlanta, then Marthasville, which is now known as Underground Atlanta, thus an inspection of the early land grants issued during the 1820's for Henry County also include today's Fulton County. Henry County's first superior court met on June 10, 1822 at the house of William Ruff. The first courthouse was built in 1823 on the town square of McDonough, but it burned soon thereafter. About 1831, a new brick courthouse was built in the public square, which served until the current three-story brick courthouse was built in 1897. The new courthouse was built across the street facing the public square, which became a park with a tall Confederate monument erected in the center. The courthouse was restored and renovated in 1980-81. In 2000, construction began on a new annex adjacent to the current courthouse.
Hancock County, Georgia Wills and Estates

Genealogists should research Hancock and Elbert Counties for families who settled together and inter-married. The scanned images of Wills and Estates not previously indexed (and thus ignored by most researchers) have been properly indicated and may be viewed by simply clicking on the link. If you did not previously have the time to search every page, it would be wise to use this site to find your lost generations of ancestors. Hancock was created in 1793 from Greene and Washington Counties, Hancock County. The county borders Baldwin, Glascock, Greene, Putnam (Oconee River), Taliaferro, Washington and Warren (Ogeechee River), It was named after John Hancock, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Sparta is the county seat. Early settlers were General H. Mitchell, Bolling Hall, Charles Abercrombie, General Adams, Henry Graybill, Joseph Bryan, William Rees, Jonathan Adams, John Montgomery, Jacob Dennis, Archibald Smith, T. Holt, Thomas Raines, James Bishop, Isham Rees, M. Martin, R. Clarke, R. Shipp, F. Tucker, L. Barnes, W. Wyley, William Saunders, James Thomas, Jesse Pope, Jonas Shivers, William Hardwick, L. Tatum, Robert Moreland and William Pentecost. Hancock County should always be researched with Greene. The Hancock County Wills and Estates (inventories, annual returns, guardianships, vouchers, sales, etc.) were bound together in the same volumes for specific time periods. The records contain a great detal of probate information about the possessions of the deceased as well as how their estates were distributed to the heirs. Such details are of my interest to the genealogist assembling family puzzles. No index is included in any volume and I have never seen any published. Therefore, scanning these images helps the researcher find ancestors otherwise unknown and provide a great new resource to all genealogists.
In 1857 Milton County (now now Fulton County) included parts of Cherokee, Forsyth and Cobb Counties. Milton was named for John Milton, Georgia's first Secretary of State and was located North of the Chattahoochee River (now Fulton County). Fulton was named for Robert Fulton, the famous inventor who experimented with a submarine boat in 1801 in France and built the Clermont, a steamboat which sailed up the Hudson River in 1807. The original territory was ceded by the Cherokees in the Treaty of Long Swamp in 1782 and by the Creeks at the Treaty of Augusta in 1783. At that time it included all of Barrow and Jackson Counties and portions of Oconee, Clarke, Madison,Banks, Hart, Stephens, Gwinnett, Hall and Habersham counties, as well as the northwestern corner of South Carolina (present-day Pickens, Oconee and Anderson counties). Researchers should also research these South Carolina counties where many of the first residents of Franklin were located. The court house was constructed in 1788.This land was among the last land in Georgia to be distributed under the headright system. In 1789 the headright system passed from state to county government, and the state began to grant hugh tracts of land to speculators. These policies ended with the Pine Barrens Scandal and the Yazoo Land Fraud. of 1795-1796. In 1803, the headright system was replaced by the 1803 land lottery. County business was conducted in the home of Warren Philpot in (Sweet) Gum Log on the Tugaloo. George Walton, signer of the Declaration of Independence, was the first chief justice. In 1788 a courthouse was approved by the state legislature but was not built until 1794. It was constructed on the old John Mullins' Ford on the Tugaloo River. Later, in 1806 a courthouse was completed in downtown Carnesville. Franklin Springs was a popular stop with early visitors and by 1800 a fledgling tourist industry of sorts began to develop, although the land was still remote. A popular tavern and resort was Traveller's Rest. When Carnesville was established in 1811 and became the county seat, another court house was built there in 1826, adjacent to the old one. This building was torn down to make way for a new court house in 1906. No wills or estates exist for this county at the Franklin County Court House prior to 1899. The early wills and deeds are probably located at the local historical society in Carnesville.
The county was named for Georgia Governor David Emanuel (1744-1810) Subsequently, portions of Emanuel County were used to create the following counties: Johnson (1858), Jenkins and Toombs (1905), Candler (1914), and Treutlen (1918). The first commissioners in 1812 were: Edward Lane, Francis Pugh, Needham Cox, Eli Whitdon, and Uriah Anderson and in 1813 Jesse Mezzle and Archibald Culberth. The Emanuel County Courthouse has been destroyed by fire five times -- in 1841, 1855, 1857, 1919, and 1938. The county records included here are the earliest surviving.
