Jackson County Court HouseJackson CountyJackson CountyThe earliest settlement in this area commenced ca 1784 with a small group of Revolutionary War veterans who settled on Franklin County's ceded lands. Jackson County was created in 1801 from portions of Franklin County. It was named after James Jackson, Revolutionary War hero, US Senator and the Governor who had to deal with the fraud involved in the Yazoo Land Act. The county originally covered 1800 square miles however from 1801 until 1914 portions were taken from Jackson to form parts of the present counties of Clarke, Oconee, Madison, Gwinnett, Hall, Walton, Banks, and Barrow. Cobb County Genealogy, Ancestors, Sources of Genealogy Records

Pine Run Grist Mill, Marietta, GeorgiaCobb County Wills and Estates

Pictured is the Pine Run Grist Mill in Marietta, Georgia. Cobb County was formed in 1832 from Cherokee County and named in honor of Thomas Willis Cobb, U.S. representative, U.S. Senator and Supreme Court Judge who subsequently named the the city of Marietta after his wife. For a number of years white traders settlers encroached on Indian lands. Upon the signing of the 1832 Treaty to remove the Cherokees, settlers flooded the territory. The Cherokees were farmers and not surprisingly, not all Cherokees emigrated to Oklahoma and Kansas. Some of them obtained permission to remain in Cobb County which is reflected in the Dawes Rolls when people from Cobb, Forsyth, Lumpkin and Gilmer Counties made application before the Dawes Commission to prove Indian ancestry. Such proof was necessary in order to obtain free land in Oklahoma. Indian trails ran from the Alabama Road North through Bartow County and across the "Shallow Ford" in the Chattahoochee. -Map of Indian Trails- The Second Georgia Land Lottery of 1832 parceled out land to settlement and the first towns of Marietta, Sweet Water, Buffalo Fish and Big Shanty. Big Shanty is remembered for sheltering Atlantans during the Battle of Atlanta which made the mad rush by railroad before General Sherman took the city. The railroad started its construction in 1836 when the State of Georgia began purchasing the right-of-way to build from the Tennessee River to the Chattahoochee River. In 1845 track was laid from Marthasville to Marietta with a stop over for water at Moon's Station in Kennesaw. During the War Between the States the earliest court house records were torched by Sherman. Earliest settlers were: Cloud, Lemon, Collins, Guess, King, etc.

NOTE: The Cobb County records have not been microfilmed and are not found at the Georgia State Archives.

Lumpkin Co. GA Wills (images), Marriages, Church Records

Lumpkin County Wills and Estates

Lumpkin County was created in 1832 and named in honor of Wilson Lumpkin who served in both state houses, as Governor, in the U. S. House of Representatives and Senate. Before that time, the Cherokees and Creeks inhabited this land, having many gold and silver mines in the territory. The Creeks and Cherokees fought a battle in Slaughter's Gap on Blood Mountain near Union County which lasted for days. The result was that the Creeks had to retreat south of the Etowah River. Long before the Georgia Gold Rush which was most in Lumpkin County, precious metals were found in the mountains near present-day Dahlonega. During the 1730's Spanish miners visited the area on a number of occasions before being expelled white English settlers who cut off their supply route from Florida. Actually gold was discovered in Lumpkin County before 1830 although mining of gold in White County was already under way.

Lincoln County was created from Wilkes County on February 20, 1796 by an Act of the General Assembly and was named for General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) of Revolutionary War fame. Lincoln was in charge of the Continental Army's Southern Department and later became President George Washington's first Secretary of War.

Maps were scanned in such a manner as to provide details for locating creeks, branches, rivers, lakes, churches, schools and cemeteries. This will enable you to better locate the old homeplace using the description from old non-specific deeds. Also, a convenience in locating both private and public cemeteries in the area. Carroll Co. GA Wills, Estates, Marriages, Deeds, Probate, Genealogy

Carroll CountyCarroll County

Carroll County Records

Pictured is Black Road 36. Carroll County was established by an act of the Georgia legislature on June 9, 1825. It was named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. The original Carroll County was a very large triangular area extending from Alabama on the west to the Chattahoochee River on the east and south. The northern boundary of the county was the Cherokee Nation. Eventually parts of five other counties, viz: Campbell, Douglas, Haralson, Heard, and Troup were taken from the original Carroll County. Carroll County was the famous Creek Indian lands signed away in the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1825 which got chief William McIntosh murdered. The home of Chief McIntosh was located in present-day Carroll County along the Chattahoochee River. Much of the personal land of McIntosh, known since 1825 as the McIntosh Reserve, is today a county park. The county seat was originally located at Old Carrollton, in the eastern part of the county near the community of Sand Hill. In 1829 the current site was selected, and the name Troupsville was suggested by the inhabitants. Researchers should consider the bordering Alabama counties when doing research.
